Out and about at Keystone...
It's not all about the skiing in the winter... or biking or golfing in the summer!
There's as little or as much to do as you care for. Here are some shots we took
around the area.
|
|
This was taken Sunday October 2nd 2005, right outside our condo at Keystone... the
aspens are golden, the cloudless sky is intensely blue, the temperature mild with the promise of
winter to come...this is a beautiful time to come visit: walk, hike, bike or just use our condo
as a base from which to enjoy the area! |
|
|
This guy apologized for getting in my shot as he and his wife (behind him) came blasting around
the corner on the bike path; but since this was exactly the shot I was going for... I didn't mind one
bit! The bike path provide miles of mellow rolling paved enjoyment for all levels and skills of bikers;
you can stay within the Keystone area proper, or ride it right on down into the 15 mile or so bike
path around Lake Dillon!
|
|
|
Ok, speaking of biking, not only is there the soft and mellow touring type of biking (like what
I'm into!) but there's also downhill mountain biking (and we mean MOUNTAIN biking!). There
are trails for all levels from Green (like skiing, the easiest) to Extreme (Double Black Plus!).
There are areas with cliff drops on the trails, so if you can handle that, you're probably
too extreme to be staying in my nice family-oriented condo and you're probably living out
of your pickup truck in the River Run parking lot or on a pool table at "The Goat" - but thanks for looking!!! :-) (Photo taken on Keystone Mountain
by Butch Leitz during the SuperD BMX Race Saturday June 30th 2007)

There are fairways and there are fairways. When playing "out west" you know that
sometimes you can find fairways that are fields of green grown into fields of brown (they
call it "gold") and it's not terribly attractive. Keystone golf courses are really spectacular!
Whether you're on a fairway of wide open vistas like this one here, or on a beautifully
peaceful fairway nestled in Colorado Blue Spruce (mouse over the picture), you're going to really enjoy golfing
at Keystone!

Keystone Stables offer a seasonal wild-west experience with trail and dinner rides that will give
your kids memories that will last a lifetime!

The award-winning Keystone Conference Center repeatedly receives top votes from planners of
conferences, meetings, incentives, executive retreats, reunions, and more featuring a full suite
of meeting capabilities and services.

This shot is from the Snake River which runs behind the property and is a wonderful place to explore
with young kids! (That's the roof-top of our building snuggled up next to the mountain!) The river
runs wide and narrow, deep and shallow (mouse over the picture) and with it's own textures
and hues and length (it runs for miles through this region) it's a marvelous place for mountain fishing.

This is a shot from the bike path on the west side of Lake Dillon looking back at Keystone
Mountain. Biking and sailing - both a beautiful way to relax during the summer in the
crisp mountain air with a picture-postcard sky up above. |
|
|
This is shot of the marina looking across Lake Dillon which is about 4 miles West of our unit
at the the Chateaux d'Mont. Not only is this respectable sized lake great for sailing and boating,
but a beautiful 18 mile mostly paved bike trail with a pretty constant grade circles the whole lake
giving you a great outdoor experience with spectacular views (mouse over the picture) of the Ten Mile Range!
|
|
|
If you go about 6 miles East on Rt. 6 from our unit, you'll feel like you're on top of the world as you come to
the Continental Divide at Loveland Pass. You'll be at 12,000 feet and you won't even need a parachute...
but you may want a sweater because you will see snow up here just about year around.
This shot was taken by us in late July while it was over 100 degrees in Denver: it was about 45 degrees here!

|
Summer and fall is a great time to be in the mountains. The air is cool, the flowers fragrant,
the hiking endless, the biking outstanding, the fish jumping, and even the golf balls fly farther
without breaking a sweat! This shot was taken in July right outside our condo on a beautiful day
with temperatures in the mid-70s!

Keystone's snow cats sit purring in the summer sun...dreaming of chasing snow bunnies once the
white stuff starts coming down...

Recently I've discovered little hikes and walks to areas that are area Ghost Towns.
This isn't an activity that may interest kids despite the sound of it - these places
are generally remote, and more for those of you looking for some interesting hikes
and drives. Ask me for specifics. This photo (and the one under it if you roll your mouse
over it) were both taken in early June up in abandoned ghost town of Saints John. The
picture shown here - kind of hard to make out - is all that's left of the silver smeltering
furnace at Saints John, named by Freemasons who established the town in 1867. The silver came
from the Wild Irishman mine located nearby. This is all above the town of Montezuma,
a small mining - now residential - a short drive from Keystone.
